Taking the lead from the International convention held in July in Australia, this year’s Summer Camp in Italy took the theme of Inspiration.

It brought together 40 people of similar mind from Poland, Germany, Switzerland, Australia, Italy and of course, the UK. For a week we walked through the spectacular Dolomites, partook of the amazing, but stodgy, local South Tyrolean fare and shared stories and songs from our individual corners of the globe. Always present are the stalwart Italians from Florence and Naples who have been coming to this camp for all 15 years of its existence and are nothing if not persistent in the things of the Lord.

We stayed in a bucolic little town called Natz perched on a mountain overlooking a small regional city called Bressanone, about an hour from the Austrian border. Most of us stayed, perhaps for the final time, in the guesthouse ‘Unterplatter’, and the overflow in other accommodation just up the road. Meals were all provided by the lady of the house, the elderly but still feisty Bertha who each night, together with her team, cooked us three epic but delicious courses. The camp is run by the inexhaustible local church member Sabine Plazter together with her husband (and Pastor) Helmuth and their three kids. Throughout the week they planned the daily activities which included football games, hefty mountain climbs and chairlift rides. In the evening, Pastor Konrad from Poland ran the proceedings.

This is the second time that I have attended this camp and once more the unity of the Lord’s Spirit was highlighted to me. All of these people come from different walks of life and, more divisively, speak different languages. My Polish is about as good as my Chinese but through common experience and with a lot of gesticulation, we understand each other. We came together nightly and we heard various speakers give testimony to how the Lord has worked in their lives. There are always a few brave people who put their hand up to translate. Also, most songs were sung in three languages (Italian, English and Polish). Good-natured chaos ensued. At the conclusion of every evening, the night owls among us headed up to the local ‘Hof’ for a slice of strudel, ein Kappucino mit Zahne (cream) and a relaxing chat about the day gone as well as the possibilities contained in the future.

Next year, it looks like we might all be making our way to Poland around the same time for a week of Baltic adventures, more inspiration and Beaver Soup. If the passion they put into their singing is anything to go by, it’s going to go off.

—

The sun shone on Saturday the 4th July, the swans gracefully floating, blissfully unaware of the people buzzing around the Wroxham Broads on this warm and dry day. The warm rays in sunny old Norwich added to the nautical excitement as we gathered to board the boats destined for a boating outreach to remember.

Rendezvous at 2.30pm, Pastor Chris, Bryan, and Wayne at the helm, organizing the crew of 10 Revival members and 8 local Norfolk folk, a young couple with a baby and a family of 5 who accepted Bryan’s invitation to spend an afternoon on the Norfolk Broads.

After a cup of coffee or tea, a cold drink and a few chippies, thirsts were quenched and bellies topped up, the 3 boats were launched at 3.25pm. Theo and his crew, on board the fastest boat set off in high spirits, Wayne with the camera lens pointed and finger clicking. All boats navigated their way successfully dodging boats and fishing lines.

There was a lot of skulduggery going on in the 3rd boat, Vikings and pirates to boot. Motoring on, sharing testimonies, talking about the power of God while taking time out from the fast pace of life proved a good medicine for all. But wait! A detour – leading to a boat vendor selling ice creams – a relief for those with that sweet tendency.

We had fun, we spoke about God, sharing out testimonies with the new folk that were there. We enjoyed the scenery and best of all this great outreach has opened doors to follow up some new people, who showed interest in considering a life in Christ. A special thanks to pastor Chris and the folk who made the effort coming up from London to support the Lords work here in Norwich.

Feeling a little fed up and angry, at some stage, come the election the British electorate will be taking the moral high ground at the expense of our political leaders at the ballot box. The pun is intended because of the shameful conduct of some MP’s who have taken liberty with the rules over claiming expenses, which is in some cases if it hadn’t been so serious would have been laughable.

But here we are, with many hanging their heads in shame having created a crisis of confidence, truth and trust.

Fortunately for us all, despite being disillusioned with those in political authority, there is a higher authority, one place, where your voice is heard, listened to, somewhere that has clear, accountable standards, a place to build trust and hope for the future. We find the answer in a book sometimes left to gather dust on a bookshelf.

If you pick up and blow the dust off the pages of this book – the Bible, you will learn that ‘…the truth will set you free’…certainly from dodgy politicians! However the real angle on God’s truth, is that His truth is not meant to be hidden. The scriptures reveal how to be found of God…in other words how to be saved from a world separated from the love of God.

In the New Testament scriptures we learn that God’s binding contract for all mankind is founded through His Son, who at Calvary, died and rose again in victory after three days in the ground, overcoming sin, sickness and death. In this way we were set free, with a new found ‘born again’ liberty that Jesus shares with Nicodemus in John 3:3-7. Now this isn’t a five minute wonder, or a quick fix or a band aid solution, from the shortest Psalm we read in Psalm 117 ‘ …the truth of the Lord endures forever…’.

As a church, RCI has a few ‘We believe…’ statements, which are really articles of faith, likened to faith Post-it’s. Here is a run through of the first:

We believe: ‘in the infallibility of the Word of God’ – put simply, the Bible is God’s plan and revelation to you and me on the 3rd rock from the sun. It is an accurate record of events that actually took place and have consequences for today. It also stands up very well to the tests of evidence.

You can work your way through a mountain of journals and books, and find that the Bible is astonishingly accurate and consistent with archaeology and secular history. Another aspect of consistency in the bible is the amazing link between the hundreds of Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah and the exact fulfilment of these in the life of Jesus.

All over world people are reading and finding the truth of God’s Word, whose lives are changed forever when they repent and are baptised by full immersion, filled with the power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2).

The dilemma is now that you know the truth…what will you do about it?

Pastor Chris Reed

Tell us abit about your background?

I was born in Wangaratta, Australia to two Dutch parents and have a older brother who was also born in Holland. Through our childhood we were home schooled by our parents. We moved to Tasmania so that all of us could be closer together, particularly Papa who had been working as a computer programmer all over Australia prior to this point. It was then that we heard about the Holy Spirit experience and within a period of a year we all received this proof that God existed and were baptised. It was around then that I got interested in electronics and got taught how to program computers. The last 8 years I’ve been working as a Software Developer after completing a degree in Computing in Tasmania. I’ve been married for a year to a girl called Pamela, who I met some 5 years ago. Our relationship slowly changed from being just friends, better friends to being in a relationship. Both of us, independently had thought it would be good to spread our geographical horizons a bit and after getting married the time was right and we moved to London.

Do you sometimes look at your life and wonder, how the earth did you get there?

Life is very strange, even with the Lord guiding you. I think everything is so much bigger, intertwined and complex than we could ever imagine. I’m beginning to learn to just sit back, take opportunities as they come and enjoy the ride.

Simply, why rap?

I like writing words that mean something and I’m not particularly enamoured by my singing voice. I really like hip hop, the rhythms, the wordplay and the beats, but I’d prefer to sing if I could.

How was the trip to PNG and would you like to tell us a little about is?

I had two weeks in PNG travelling with some 20 people from Australia, New Zealand and Africa of various ages. We were over there for the 25th anniversary of RCI in the country. Our trip took in a week in the highlands and a second week in the more urban areas, including a spectacular rally at a stadium in the second largest city, Lae. I went over to get some perspective, to see how other people with the same experience deal with it in their context. The urban areas suffer similar pressures to the western culture; that is – being consumed by desire for goods and having faith spoilt by knowledge.

In the “simpler” regions, in the highlands for instance, the Word is used very tactile manner and there’s a palpable enthusiasm that is not dimmed or dulled by social etiquette. This is evident in the preaching, the singing and even down to the everyday manner of the people there. The power of the Lord is obviously operating in their life and they’re happy about it. That’s it.

Since then, I’ve thought a lot about what the established social norms are how much I stick by them. Consider then Jesus who had his Father first in all his communication with other people, ruffling a few feathers.

How was the move to the UK?

Moving to the UK has made me feel a lot more mortal. Although I understand I have eternal life I’m much more aware that there the Lord has only given us VERY few years on his training ground. This has made me reconsider my priorities. A great thing about being here has made me trust entirely in the Lord, and He’s coming through continuously. I’ve never been less stressed in my life.

Where does your passion for playing the piano come from?

It’s a form of expression. I like to express myself in any way that I can whether it be writing, conversation or drawing but I think playing piano is the thing is that I’ve stuck at the longest and maybe its the most direct conduit to the soul for me… Most musicians would probably agree that their passion for music is heightened when they get to play with other people who are on a similar wavelength. A discussion around why this is may be getting a little too metaphysical other than to say that its an exchange of ideas and expansion of perspective.

What are your desires and dreams for RCI UK?

My hope is twofold. One that the people that make up the church here currently, including myself, continue to grow in their understanding of the Lord and realise how important it is that we have each other, that the Lord has brought us together for a reason. The second, feeding from the first, is that I hope that that passion and zeal that we have for the Lord then rubs of on other people. From there, I trust the Lord will do the rest.

Could you give us a small testimony?

I believed there was a God all my life whom I would pray to as a child until my early teens. I heard that there was a gift to be had from God. I didn’t give it a second thought. Not really understanding anything about the full extent of the plan of God I asked him one night in bedroom “give me the Holy Spirit” because this what I had heard it called. A few seconds later I spoke in tongues as God promised. My understanding was enlightened and I all of a sudden the Bible made a lot of sense and prayer actually started making difference in my life. I also got baptised by full immersion as the Bible highlighted that I should do. I think that the largest thing that the Lord has done for me is given me a peace and confidence about the world and where it’s heading and also, on a smaller scale, in my personal life. Without the Lord I probably would tie myself to a bulldozer in the rain forest. Also seeing the Lord provide in the most micro and macroscopic ways on a daily basis, in my life and for others, continues to build my faith daily.

A team of five saints from London and Australia headed to Malawi. The idea behind the trip was twofold, follow up on the Maize mills project at Lilongwe and Blantyre (Chirimba), and encourage the young peoples groups throughout Malawi.

We arrived at Blantyre in the south of Malawi and worked our way north and east to Lilongwe via Mozambique. The Chirimba assembly in Blantyre was our first opportunity to get together with the Young Peoples leaders and oversight from the surrounding areas and talk about the future leaders in the Church. This was a very fruitful meeting and was an opportunity for our youngies from overseas to share their testimonies and experiences with our African brethren.

This meeting covered cultural situations and paved the way for some ground breaking opportunities that the African Youngies were very excited about and planted a seed that is bearing fruit today in the form of sixty plus baptisms and people receiving the Holy Spirit (speaking in Tongues) due totally from YP’s outreaches.

While at Chirimba we checked out the progress on the new maize mill everything is in readiness for the power to be connected and machinery to be installed all that is needed is for the electricity authority to hook up the power!

From Chirimba we visited Nulanje, Phalombe ,Balaka, Salima-LakeMalawi, Dedza, Lilongwe, M’nthunda, Mozambique, Mkalema.

Two highlights from these destinations were the trip into Mozambique, a supposed fifteen minute trip over the border turned into a two and a half hour jaunt to a village destination that no one had been to before! This trip was in a 14 seater bus designed for highway driving, we had 16 people crammed in on roads that ranged from four wheel drive to goat tracks, exciting was one way to describe this leg of the adventure!

Once we finally arrived at our destination it was well worth the rough roads and bridge crossings the welcome by the Mozambique saints was awesome the singing and involvement of the saints in the meeting was truly inspiring and we left on a spiritual high that we talked about for the rest of the trip. The boarder crossing back into Malawi added to the experience with a certain young man unlikely to take photos of Government building (be they ever so rustic) ever again!

The seventy plus people we witnessed being baptised and spirit filled was probably the high point of the trip and something we will always cherish.

All in all a wonderful trip with great encouragement spiritually for all involved.
